The entire purpose of your strength and conditioning program should be to supplement your Jiu-Jitsu training, not replace it. A good strength and conditioning program will help you build a good fitness base and should help with injury prevention.

Is Crossfit Good For Jiu-Jitsu?

One question that I get from my students or email subscribers is, “Is Crossfit good for Jiu-Jitsu“?

The answer is of course, yes …. IF you cross-train in the correct way.

One thing that you do not want to do however,  is replace Jiu-Jitsu with Crossfit.

Training Jiu-Jitsu and being on the mats should be your number one priority

if you are a competitive or serious Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.

Let’s take a look at some of the basic and probably obvious pros and cons of training Crossfit for Jiu-Jitsu.

I will then address specific reasons why you may or may not want to add in additional cross training workouts into your weekly routine.

You will also learn the number one flaw of most Crossfit classes and what you can do to make sure you do not become victim to this in your training.

The thing about Crossfit that can sometimes get Jiu-Jitsu practitioners injured is the fact that it is very competitive and it’s not “Just a workout”.

Crossfit is actually a sport, a very competitive one at that and most Jiu-Jistu guys and girls do not like to lose.

So should you cross train and do Crossfit to help your Jiu-Jitsu ?

In my opinion yes you should do additional cross training about 2 – 3 times per week if your body can handle it.

However, I would not just do random WOD’s (Workout of the day).

The problem and one of the only down sides to Crossfit is that it does not address periodization.

Depending on what coach runs the classes, sometimes they put back to back workouts

that tax the same muscles and energy systems without allowing your body adequate time to recover.
