One thing I see as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor and school owner is a lot of people getting frustrated during their first 6 months of training.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most fun and exciting sports on the planet. But it takes a while to truly understand what it is that you are doing.
For example, you can start a boxing or kickboxing class and on the very first day leave that class feeling on top of the world. You feel like you could out strike anyone who walked past you.
For the most part, the techniques were not too hard and although you probably weren’t perfect you left feeling pretty good about yourself.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is different. You could be a 200 + pound athlete that can bench press 300 lbs and still leave frustrated because the 140lb skinny guy kept choking you out. “How is this happening” ? You will leave shaking your head in disbelief wondering how that was possible.
One of two things usually happen from that moment.
Either you realize just how effective Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is and you sign up eager to learn more or your ego gets the best of you and you don’t ever show back up.
The reality is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is so much fun and super effective.
In my opinion any healthy person in the world can be good at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu if they stick with it. However, a lot of people never make it past the first 6 months of training.

The first 6 months learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are the most frustrating. You will feel uncoordinated, tired and clumsy. It will seem like everyone else is getting it easy but you will feel like a fish out water. THIS IS NORMAL
Your body will start adapting to the movements, techniques will become easier and you may even make your first training partner Tap Out to one of your submissions you have been working on in class.
The fact is if you stick with Jiu-Jitsu long enough you will train for life. You just have to make it past the learning curve and that is where all of the fun begins to happen !
If you are feeling frustrated and feel like you are not learning as fast as you should be… trust me and stick through it… Jiu-Jitsu will change your life. NEVER STOP TRAINING.
